Talk about coming a long way in a short amount of time.
Former Lac du Bonnet Senior School student Seka Lussier's whirlwind year has just been capped off with the 17-year-old being signed on by a Toronto talent agent, after Lussier made her mark in a recent talent showcase that earned her a scholarship to the Toronto Academy of Acting for Film and Television.
"It's been quite a journey, that's for sure," Lussier said. "I'm having a blast."
Journey is an understatement. Lussier, who lived in Lac du Bonnet for four years prior to moving to Winnipeg in 2008, began 2009 with little more than a hope of breaking into the acting world.
After doing some high school drama and taking some acting classes at Winnipeg's Prairie Theatre Exchange, she auditioned for the Miss Teen Manitoba-Canada pageant when she learned she could win a partial acting scholarship.
Despite her tiny size (she stands only four feet, nine inches tall) she was chosen as a finalist. She didn't win the pageant, but she achieved her goal of auditioning for the partial acting scholarship and won the opportunity to compete in Toronto at the 2009 ITP Talent Showcase.
She didn't just do well at the competition - she won first place in each category she participated in. First place monologue. First place TV commercial. First place in print. Teen Actor of the Year 2009.
Talk about an impressive showing.
"I've always loved acting and I just went out there and gave it my all," she said.
Now she's been signed by Susan J. Burych Model & Talent Management. Burych is credited with discovering Canadian Model Daria Werbowy, who's considered one of the top ten super models in the world, and who's appeared on major magazine covers like W Magazine, Vogue, and Flare.
"She has offices an Los Angeles and Toronto, so that opens up a lot of possibilities," Lussier said. "It's really exciting."
Lussier's mother Tina said her daughter's break into the acting world has been a sudden one, but a great experience for all involved.
"I'm learning so much as we go along," Tina said. "It's been a full-time job, but it's so worth it."
Seka was welcomed into the Toronto Academy of Acting and had the privilege of studying with Christopher Healy, who's been the artistic director and principle acting instructor with the Toronto Academy of Acting for Film and Television since 1997.
Seka has achieved her certificate for successfully completing the school's full-time Film Acting Program.
"It was intense. It's a year-long course condensed into three months, but I had a blast," she said.
Now, Seka intends to hone her acting skills and hopefully soon get some work through her agent. She's already had the lead role in an educational video for the Manitoba Brain Injury Association.
Her grandfather Ed is also involved in the modeling/acting world, recently appearing on a Winnipeg billboard for Red River College and serving as a paid extra for a movie being filmed about the life of hockey legend Don Cherry.
Looks like talent runs in the family. But it's also the influence of teachers that Seka is grateful for. She credits Lac du Bonnet Senior School drama teacher Karen Augustine with helping her discover her potential.
"She taught us so much. It was a real privilege to study under her," Seka said.
She hopes to eventually move to the United States to pursue her acting dreams.
"I have such a great time on stage or in front of the camera. It's like a different world being in the spotlight. I love making people cry and laugh and feel every other emotion you can think of. It's a great experience."
